Dearest Mignon
Yes, please take two tickets for us. 35 I promised this to Dr. Payne last Sunday. And Mr. Lewes will occupy his place in the flesh. I would beseech you to come round and go with us, only I am uncertain whether we may not have to go to another place beforehand. As to my enjoyment of the Two Grenadiers, it would have been impossible, but for the complete reduction of it to symbolism in my own mind, and my belief that it really touches nobody now as enthusiasm for the execrable Napoleon I. But I feel that the devotion of the common soldier to his leader (the sign for him of hard duty) is the type of all higher devotedness, and is full of promise for other and better generations. [I don't know,] as Mr. Curdle says, [whether I make myself understood.] 36
We shall be very glad to see Mr. and Mrs. Percy Wyndham. 37 That you admire her is a warrant to me of her suiting my taste in many ways.
We are off to our spiritual Pop, and shall post this by the way. Oblige me by keeping well.
