Dear Mrs. Atkinson 379
I remember very well the interesting party which the name [Frothingham] 380 recals to me, notwithstanding the many eventful years that now divide me from our meeting at Mr. Chapman's in the Strand. Many kind letters come to me from your side of the Atlantic which want of time and strength for unnecessary correspondence obliges me to leave unanswered, but I cannot allow you to imagine me discourteously indifferent to your friendly recollection of our interviews in old days. That you are the mother of grown-up children is one of the many reminders I am constantly receiving that the larger part of life's journey lies behind me. I trust that the waymarks with you are signs of long-continued happiness, in spite of that infirmity of the eyes to which you refer.
Of Dr. and Mrs. Chapman I rarely hear anything, and the news of his death must I imagine be mistaken, since no public announcement of it has fallen under our notice.
Your request for my photograph 381 it is impossible for me to fulfil, as I have had no such image of myself taken. Requests for autographs and photographs are too numerous for me to answer them without great discomfort, and a sacrifice of time that would hardly be warranted by the value of the result. Hence I resign myself to being pronounced rather churlish by numerous [unknown friends.]
