My dear Cara
We returned from Italy six weeks ago, but since then our time and feelings have been absorbed by our poor Thornie, who arrived three days afterwards -- two months sooner than we had thought it possible for him to get to us. We have been suffering much in seeing his suffering and our days have been broken into small fragments. The cause of his illness, which at the best must be long, was an injury of the spine.
It would be a pity to write only to tell a friend of such sadness; but I am unwilling to lose, by further silence, any chance of hearing from you or seeing you, since the years offer so few of such chances; and as we have not seen Mr. and Mrs. Call [three words deleted] I think you are likely to imagine us still away.
My motive for writing is to know as much as I can about you, so be sure that I shall be grateful for every detail on that subject. With love to all,
