My best love to all. I think of business with great anxiety, for everything seems to indicate the oncoming of a trying time.
I have just had a note from Mrs. Pears telling me that she and Mr. Pears will call today. I suppose that I shall hear from him that trade is good, but he is Gideon's fleece. 454
Miss Tilley says that Mr. Bray talked of bringing you to London this spring. Is there any hope of that? Alas! I can't invite you, for there is not room for two people to turn round in my bedroom.
Have you read the Westminster? I am thinking of doing the Belles Lettres in the Co[ntemporary] Lit[erature] after this quarter. It would be £16.16 a quarter, so I think it would be worth while groaning over. Mais n'en dis rien. I see less probability than ever of my having another 6d for Strauss. I believe Mr. Parkes has pocketed all the money paid to him and reimbursed none of the subscribers. In haste,
