MS: Mr. Gordon S. Haight. Hitherto unpublished.
The Priory, | 21. North Bank, | Regents Park.
March 2. 73.
My dear Mrs. Simpson
Many thanks for the lovely photograph.
You would have been less surprized at Mr. Lewes's outburst the other day 741 if you had been able to imagine what a feeble wretch I have been this winter, and how often he has seen me overdone by week-day appointments -- the "boiling over" of receptions beyond the rim of Sunday. My friends who are kept at home on Sundays usually send me a note or card to ask if I can see them on a particular afternoon. If at any time you think it worth while to do so, I will let you know whether there is any obstacle of illness or incompatible engagement; and thus you will be saved a journey in vain. I hope to be less good-for-nothing by and by. Believe me
Sincerely yours
M. E. Lewes.
