Monday.
Dear Friends all
Thanks for the budget of this morning, and congratulations on the success of the birthday festivities. We went to quite a gay party at Mr. Mackay's on Saturday -- Miss Rowan, 20 a learned lady in spectacles, Mr. Vansittart Neale, 21 and other small celebrities. Good Mr. Mackay has been taking trouble to get me to Hastings for my health -- calling on Miss Fellowes, daughter of the Religion of the Universe, 22 and inducing her to write me a note of invitation. But Mr. Chapman can't spare my head and hands this week.
Sara will be heartily welcome, and Mrs. C. said she would write and tell her so this morning. Unfortunately I had an invitation to the Parkes's 23 to meet Cobden on Saturday evening -- I was sorry to miss that. Miss Parkes is a dear, ardent, honest creature, and I hope we shall be good friends. 24
I have nothing else to tell you. I am steeped in dullness within and without. Heaven send some lions tonight to meet Fox, 25 who is coming. In haste,
Ever your
Marian.
I have opened my letter to send you an advertisement we found in the Times today. "To Gentlemen. A converted medical man, of gentlemanly habits, and fond of Scriptural conversation, wishes to meet with gentleman of Calvinistic views, thirsting after truth, in want of a Daily Companion. A little temporal aid will be expected in return. Address, Verus"! 26

Signature

Marian.
