My dear Bessie
I am a little behindhand but not the less sincere in saying, welcome to London. I hope you will let me say welcome to this house of ours, without taking it unkindly that I do not go to see you. It is not compatible with the arrangements of my life that I should undertake to pay visits in London, and my friends are all kind enough to come and see me on terms of non-re[ci]procity. If they were not so good, I should be obliged to give up seeing them, having neither time nor strength for the expeditions I must incur in order to return their visits.
But you will always be kept warmly in my heart and very welcome as a sight to me, from my lively memory of past days when you were very good to me. Always, dear,
Your affectionate
Marian.
