Dearest Barbara
I was very glad to have your nephew's letter giving me some news of you, and I trust that if he were to write again now he could tell me of your more rapid progress in strength. Here the weather alternates daily from dismal raininess and mugginess to clear, sharp cheeriness. At Hastings I hope you are spared the dark days.
The day before yesterday we drove to Mrs. Allingham's to see her pictures -- a charming little collection. 773 We were heartily glad to see her looking healthy again, and there were also the children to admire, the boy a striking beauty from his rare tone of colour.
Everything is well with us according to the town standard, except that you are away and not yet robust. We have seen many pleasant friends on our Sundays, and now our Saturday concerts have begun to give us our weekly musical food. The sadder part of one's life is reading the Times reports about France, 774 and imagining the sufferings of the poor unglorified fellows in the ranks both Russian and Turkish.
By the way, have you read Tourgu'e9neff's Terre Neuve? 775 It is worth reading. But of course you take care -- or Miss Scott 776 takes care for you -- not to let your head get tired. And I too must take care not to tire you with too many suggestions.
