My dear Barbara
Rejoiced to hear that you are coming home so soon! This note is simply to give the assurance that I am still alive to love you, and that we shall probably be on the old premises when you get home -- a moment which will be, I imagine, a little too early for the brief trip to Heidelberg and T'fcbingen which we contemplate.
I have been a sad invalid lately, and last week had a severe attack of a new sort -- neuralgia just above the left hip. I am so far better that I have had no fit of pain for several days, but I am still rather [done up,] and tired this morning by having received rather a large party of visitors yesterday -- the first day for a week that I have been beyond the door-sill. 19
Mr. Lewes is unusually well, so that between us we have nearly the usual share of health. But that doesn't serve me to write letters with, any more than the high average of food-consumption nourishes all the hungry.
Do you mind about the Conservative majority? 20 I don't.
I trust that your health is none the worse, since you seem to write in spirits -- and that on the whole I shall hear of your risky journey having been a success. Best love to Nannie.
