Dear Miss Beneke 541
So far as I am able to judge in a case quite away from my observation, I should say that you would do well -- no duties opposing -- to have a course of Mathematics.
Allow me, as an elder person, to caution you against taking life too eagerly and looking at all things as means, instead of regarding each good, pure, beautiful exercise of faculty as a sufficient end.
I am just now much oppressed with difficulties and trials in my own inward life, and much claimed by others. This will be an explanation to you of my brevity in answering your confidential letter. Believe me, with sincere wishes for your welfare
