I have also read 15 pages of Miss Lupton's translation, 351 comparing it with the original. I think it may be made tolerable by revisal, but that revisal must be entrusted to a person of conscientiousness and ability. She appears to understand the author very well, but she has no nice sense of style and the value of words. Her grammar is sometimes defective, like her spelling. . . . There are many faults such as tautology, which shew a want of repeated revision on her own part. . . . Still you are not likely to get anyone who will do Ewald better, if at all, and Miss L.'s heart seems to be so thoroughly in the thing. . . .
I have DeQuincey's Autobiographical Sketches 352 with me, and have now done with them.
