My dear M.D. 318
I do sincerely share in the joy you must be feeling. The sweetest of all success is that which one wins by hard exertion, and I am sure all who know you must admire the persevering energy with which you have worked your way through all difficulties to this new starting point in your life.
I dare say I am the slowest of all your friends in expressing my sympathy, but I have been waiting because I wanted to tell you at the same time that I had taken a step which I have long been meditating -- that of telling my brother and sister that I am married. I wrote for that purpose on Monday, so now I shall not need to trouble you further with the transmission of letters, and you must henceforth remember that I am Mrs. Lewes to all my relatives.
George tells me to say that he shall send you the article on Suicide 319 in a few days. He too claps his hands and says, "Well done!" to you.
Such grassy vallies in this delicious island, with sleek cows turning mild faces on us as we pass them! Such shadowy lanes and glimpses of the sea at unexpected openings! Everything that you must long for as you walk hot and dusty and deafened along the Strand. But no -- I dare say you are too full of review articles and pathological wisdom to have space for dreamy longings.
We thought the last number of the Review solid and interesting.
Wilson's article 320 and Herbert Spencer's 321 seemed to me the most valuable. Literature and Society 322 is the only one &unknown;I read which&unknown; I thought poor and unsatisfactory.
