Dear Friend
My authority about Fanny Lewald's book 208 was Robert Chambers, 209 seconded by Dr. Schmitz. 210 She was R. Chambers's guest during her stay in Edinburgh. He said that her descriptions were ludicrously incorrect. Of course the thing is no affair of mine, but I thought you would wish me to tell you what I had heard.
I shall return to town some day before the end of next week -- probably Wednesday or Thursday. You are mistaken about my health. I have not had one headache since I left London and I never had a journey which did me so much good as this.
You seem to have a great many irons in the fire about the next number of the Review. I certainly think you should not commit us both to Mill and Chapman. 211 These contingent articles are very tiresome.
I thought you had put a definite request to J. Martineau to write on Kingsley's book and the Hist[or]y of Belief. 212 Now you say you wish he would write an article on the Church. You remember that Fox was for the Ballot? 213 Not that that signifies -- it is one "glorious profession" as Mrs. J. Martineau says to her husband.
I was beginning to cross my letter by mistake. I do not think you need trouble yourself to write that long letter you talk of to Mr. Bray. He seems to know very well how matters stand.
