My dear Sir
When you have read the enclosed letter, you will understand that it would be painful to me to leave it without any sort of response.
Will you take the trouble to answer it for me, and say, that my reason for sending my book to Mr. Froude was a literary admiration of long standing -- an admiration which gives a peculiar value to the fact that the reading of my book has made him wish to know me. But that the reasons which urge me to maintain my incognito are imperative, and oblige me to renounce the very great pleasure I should anticipate from our knowing each other more intimately than through our writings.
Perhaps you will be writing to me soon. In that case, will you return me Mr. Froude's letter par la m'eame occasion?
