Thank you for the cheque for £120 which you have been so good as to send me before the usual term. 1083
I hope to send you the first volume of my new novel 1084 shortly. Your letters are always cheering and I often wonder what unfortunate thin-skinned authors do whom the Fates have allotted a disagreeable, unsympathetic publisher. I can never be sufficiently glad that they sent me to you.
I do hope the edition of the [Clerical Scenes] will move off in a reasonable time, else I shall not avoid disappointment in spite of the philosophy you urge upon me. Ever, my dear Sir
