My dear Mr. Blackwood
I send by post the manuscript of a poem written early in 1874, 755 about which I have only the request to make that you will allow it to be printed for me to the extent of two proofs -- simply that I may keep it by me for a gradual estimate in the more flaw-revealing form of type. And will you, please, ask that it may be printed in the same format as Jubal?
I should like you to read it when you have an hour's quiet leisure and tell me whether it makes itself easily intelligible and impressive for you. It is not a milky meal.
I am very glad to think that we have settled together on a satisfactory standing form for the series of books. And though I have little confidence in a great sale for such an edition in this un-book-buying world, I trust that there will be enough to hinder any regret.
If you think it not inconsistent with prudence or any wise consideration to print a 3/6 edition of [Romola] under the existing right of Smith and Elder to continue their 2/6 edition, I shall like much to see it ranging with our handsome 3/6 volumes. But of course I should not wish anything in opposition to etiquette.
I imagine you will remain at Strathtyrum till the end of November and am hoping that you share our fine days. The summer was such as to make us resigned to giving up that journey to Scotland which was made tempting by your kind wish to see us there. I hope you are nevertheless the better for the month of country life. Town does not greatly commend itself to us as an exchange for our Heights.
A post card to say you have received the M.S. is the only needful response to this, until you have something that you care to say.
