My dear Sir
I would wait to write when I had better news to tell you, if it were not that I think you may possibly be counting on an article from Mr. Lewes for the next Maga. He has collected material for an article on "Mad dogs" and has already written a portion of it: but for the last fortnight he has been constantly ailing and seems to have been losing both strength and flesh. There have been very few mornings in which he has been able to sit at his desk, constantly recurring headaches, with sickness, compelling him to lie down. We are hoping every day that the next will be the beginning of better times, and always, when he is able, he takes to his writing for an hour or two in the morning, so it is possible that you may see a packet from him before the end of the month; but, you perceive, there are heavy chances against it. Of course the sunshine looks all the less bright to me, but happily I keep well and strong.
I hope you have no thoughts that can disturb your enjoyment of the country. Surely this is glorious weather for golf, bright, but not sultry. I wish I could have sent you a letter with more welcome news in it to assist the skiey influences.
