My dear Sir
On casting his eyes over the advertisements in the weekly newspapers this morning, Mr. Lewes observes that the cheap edition of the Spanish Gypsy is only advertised in the list below Pollock's Course of Time, 843 where it would hardly strike any one who was not in search of it. In case there should not have been any express order for its separate advertisement I think it is worth while to trouble you by drawing your attention to the matter. In justice to the book it seems to me that there should be a distinct, prominent announcement of the Third and Cheaper Edition. And as Mudie advertises the original edition half bd. at 14s/ 844 there is a good chance for the cheaper edition in comparison with that expensive form. I have no superstitions about these things, but the practice of duly acquainting the public with the appearance of a new, cheaper edition commends itself as reasonable. The routine of a large business often involves some inadvertence to specialities, and on this ground I mention the point to you.
Mr. Langford sent me three specimens of covers to choose from, and after all, I determined on the old colour, the other samples being unattractive. It is perhaps an advantage not to change a colour which is to some extent associated with the original form. Always
