My dear Sir
The year opens with good auguries. I have begun my novel this morning, and now a second Pug 1 is come to be a faithful companion through my life -- reminding me always of two things that I care for a good deal -- the memory of my poor black-nosed pet, and the kindness of the Friend who gratified my too extravagant desires.
Montalembert's words 2 are very precious to me coming after I have learned to admire his book as I do.
All happiness to you and Mrs. Blackwood in this coming year. I wish I could believe that I shall contribute to it by writing a book you will like to read.
