My dear Sir
Forgive me, or rather pity me, that I am obliged to molest you with a troublesome request. The other day, I received a second letter from Mr. Lucas, and this morning a third. 140 I enclose them that you may see the need of a definitive reply. Will you be kind enough to write a brief and civil letter for me, stating that my anonymity at present precludes correspondence? And will you write it in your own name, as, I think, that will be the more decisive conclusion?
