Dear Mr. Doulton
Only today have I received your kind letter, written, I see, on the 10th of July! You will have divined, I hope, that we left town before your handsome present arrived at the Priory. And though our letters are sent on twice a week, it has happened somehow that yours has been detained and enclosed in the monthly parcel of books. My chief regret in the matter is that I have not the second beautiful bit of [Doulton Ware] before me as I write to keep company with the Bowl which we brought down with us and which has been a constant remembrance of our interesting visit to the Lambeth Pottery. Believe me, I am sincerely grateful to you for your kind attentions and especially for bearing in mind the gift on which you allowed me to make my [mark]. 113
Just before we left town I was telling Mr. Burne Jones of the interesting Tinworth 114 whose name I hope will by and by need no such reporting. Such indication as I was able to give of the works we had seen gave our friend Mr. Burne Jones a strong desire to see the artist, and he said that he would, as soon as possible, make a journey to Lambeth for that purpose.
Pray be so kind as to recall us to Mr. Tinworth's recollection, and assure him that we have not yet lost the cheering benefit of our interview with him.
Indeed our visit to Lambeth ranges with me beside our visit to Murano 115 with the added ground of delight that the Doulton establishment belongs to our own country and is benefiting the workers near our own doors. And I think you will agree with me that we are bound to care more for London even at its ugliest than for Venice in its utmost beauty. But you are helping to spread beauty in London too.
