I remember well the happy day we spent at Tiefurt, 226 my own want of appreciation for the Sauer-milch, my bungling attempt to speak German, the thunderstorm, the tiny rooms, and the entertainment Prof. Sauppe gave us by reading aloud . . . from the MS. of Goethe's [Jahrmarkt.] . . . Indeed the memory of the Weimar days is very dear to me, and I often think with wondering gratitude how kind people were to me there -- half dumb foreigner as I was. . . .
With regard to the translation of my book, I feel sure that educated as you have been and with the advantage of a critic like Professor Sauppe, there are guarantees for the worth of a translation that might be done by you, beyond what is usually found in those who undertake such labours. I believe you know that all my works, except [Romola,] are already translated into German; at least, if I am not mistaken in supposing that [The Scenes of Clerical Life] have been translated by some one. [Romola] is entirely in the hands of the publisher, and I have no control over any business arrangements connected with it.
. . . I mean the passage in which you speak of your desire to translate my [next novel.] I am not a very industrious author, and production with me depends on many conditions too uncertain to be predicted at this moment.
