January 2. 1877.
Dear Mr. Smith
Still better than the beauty of your handsome New Year's gift is the kind remembrance it assures me of. My grateful pleasure in receiving it has only one reserve. Are the bon-bons meant to sweeten your absence from our doorstep for another year?
Mr. Lewes suggests to me a better ground for contentment in the fact that you are residing at Brighton, and this in consequence of Mrs. Smith's health allowing her to remain in England through the winter.
I trust that this comfort will be more and more confirmed and that the gift which the New Year bears in its hand for you may be that supreme one, perfect family happiness.
Believe me, with many pleasant recollections,
Yours always sincerely
M. E. Lewes.
