My dear Sir
Pray excuse a superstitious distrust of the Post Office arising from the fact that some time ago a letter of mine was lost in transmission.
I was unable to send an answer to your kind letter by your messenger, and now an uneasiness has taken hold of me lest the answer which I posted a few hours after may have missed delivery.
It is a hard test of human charity to ask for an unnecessary letter, but I dislike so much the possibility of having seemed indifferent to your delicate consideration of my wishes that I venture on that test, while feeling a little ashamed of myself for doing so. Two lines to say that my answer reached you will set my nervous fidgets at rest. 536
