Dear Mr. Robertson
On your own account simply, over and above the other ties which give me an interest in your engagement to Miss Crompton, 113 I am gratified to be told of it. For Mr. Lewes and I have long had a high value for your society, and have liked to think that we might number you among our friends. We congratulate you sincerely on a relation so full of promise. A good while ago Mr. Lewes had the pleasure of seeing Miss Crompton at a garden party and expressed to me when he came home his admiration for her sweet face.
Please give my love to my friends who are with you. I trust that Mrs. Harry Crompton's face has less of pearly delicacy than when I said goodbye to her, and that little Paul is flourishing. 114
We have enjoyed our retreat in this pretty corner of the world, and Mr. Lewes has been on the whole prosperous in health as well as happily industrious in psychological studies. I am a little below my average condition, but we hope to start for the Continent by the middle of September, and a journey is often curative for me.
We shall be at home again at the end of October. Perhaps by that time you will be married. Do not forget us, and believe me always.
