My dear Sir
Mr. Chapman has agreed to give me carte blanche with regard to your article, so I can now tell you that I will with pleasure undertake the task you do me the honour to trust to me. I am going into the country to see my sister and my friends at Rosehill on the 2nd, and as I shall probably be away a fortnight, it will perhaps be best to defer the sending of the M.S. to town until my return. I shall most likely be here again by the 14th. The proximate cause of my withdrawal from the management of the W.R. -- a withdrawal which, so far as its occurrence just now is concerned, is my own act -- is Mr. Chapman's want of money. 194 I am on perfectly friendly terms with him.
I dined with Sir James and Lady Clark on Wednesday, and had the additional pleasure of meeting Mr. Helps, whose agreeable writings had prepared me to like him.
I am glad that Mrs. Combe has so pleasant a distraction as the Italian Opera. 195 It is the one I like best myself. With kindest regards to her, I am, my dear Sir,
