My dear Sir
I ought to have told you before this that Mr. Chapman thinks your arrangement with regard to the printing of your article an excellent one, and has begged me to say that he entirely accedes to it.
Thank you for sending me the letter from the "Manchester Examiner." Mr. Huxley's article is gone to press without my seeing it, 193 so that I am in ignorance as to the mode in which he has dealt with Noble's book. Mr. Huxley's is not the organization for a critic, but it is difficult to find a man who combines special scientific knowledge with that well-balanced development of the moral and intellectual faculties, which is essential to a profound and fair appreciation of other men's works.
I hope you and Mrs. Combe are not suffering from the severity of the weather. For lungs that can bear it, it is a great improvement on the fogs we have been living in till the last week. Ever, my dear Sir,
