My dear Sir
I am heartily sorry that Dr. J. Brown has returned a negative to your proposition, for I have a very favourable impression of his mental character, and I cannot help wishing that Mr. Bastard would consent to defer his article until January, supposing that Dr. Brown would engage to write it within that prolonged period.
Mr. Robert Dunn, 128 whom you mentioned in one of your letters as possibly suited to our purpose in this matter, is, I fear, a dry writer, and does not, so far as I have been able to judge, possess the inestimable advantage of that wide culture which not only gives a charm to an author's presentation of his subject, but also contributes to the breadth and justness of his views. For the rest, Mr. Dunn is a man of considerable intellect and certainly of great professional experience. Whatever may be the decision, it is important that it should be arrived at quickly, as, failing the article on hereditary qualities, we must seek another to supply its place.
I share your disagreement with some parts of the article on the Restoration of Belief (J. Martineau's); indeed, the admission of those theological views into the Westminster is a constant source of dissatisfaction to me. I see nothing for it, however, but that the Review should remain, at least for some time to come, a sort of Noah's Ark. On this point I should like to say much more to you.
