My dear Miss Davies
If you have not made up your mind as to the person who ought to be Chief Secretary to the Educational Board, will you turn your attention to the claims of Mr. Nassau Senior?
I am interested in him for the sake of his wife -- one of the best women I know. But the best of wives is not a good reason for a man's election to an important office, and I am far from undertaking to recommend Mr. Senior to you as the fittest candidate, since I know nothing of his rivals. Of his own qualifications I only know that he was Secretary of Commissions under three Lord Chancellors, and that he appears to me, from my own slight observation and the more experienced testimony of others, to have some qualities which would make him a good public servant and fellow-workman.
But my utmost intention in troubling you with this note, is to give some emphasis to his name as a candidate supposing that you have any attention to spare for them.
