Dear Mr. Pigott
I hope you will not think I am assuming a privilege that belongs only to quite old friends, in asking for a corner to express my sympathy under circumstances that will necessarily modify your life. Not unfavourably, however, I feel convinced. And I have the more right to say so, because I, too, waited long before I began to write steadily as a matter of duty, and I have found that my best happiness was reserved for me in that sort of work. So must yours be, for so much faculty of a specially literary kind as you possess implies the impossibility of thorough satisfaction without some corresponding exercise.
I don't say, then, that I am sorry for what has happened. I only ask you not to be offended at my telling you that I share George's sincere interest in all that concerns you, and am especially glad that your new career keeps you in London, where I hope you will not become too busy to dine with us, chat with us, and sing to us, as of old.
