Dear Mr. Evans
It is not my way to write anything except from my own inward prompting. Your proposal 334 does me honour, and I should feel much trust in the charming pencil of Miss Greenaway, but I could never say [I will write this or that] until I had myself felt the need to do it.
I too was sorry that I did not see Mrs. Evans when I called. The servant kindly invited me to wait, but I was feeling cold after my drive and was afraid of staying out after sundown. I am sure that 'abshe'bb Mrs. Evans will not think me indifferent to the pleasure of seeing her, and will understand that I avoid being out late in the afternoon in obedience to my doctor's warning against chills.
I return to town next week. Believe me, dear Mr. Evans
