St. Leonard's August 9.
Dear Friend
Thanks many for the Herald, which one reads with avidity at St. Leonard's, whatever one may do in London. It would have been a satisfaction to your benevolence to see me sitting on the beach laughing at its many jokes (i.e. the Herald's) and sympathizing with your indignation against Judge Maule. 357
You always used to send me an account of the results of stock-taking, and I missed that proof of your understanding my affection very much. Do you mean that you gained £200 exclusive of housekeeping etc. or only that altogether? It always helps me to be happy when I know that you are so, but I do not choose to vindicate myself against doubts of that, because it is unworthy of you to entertain them. I am going on as well as possible physically -- really getting stout, and, as I have been telling Mrs. Chapman, being regenerated by baptism and -- beer drinking! This latter sacrament I have taken to for the last week and find it very efficacious.
If I had chosen to go to the Continent I should have gone with the Combes. I have had a letter from Mr. Combe today in which he says that Mrs. C. is much better. But perhaps you have heard this before.
I should like to have a good laugh with you immensely. How nice it would be to meet you and Cara on the beach this evening, and instead of sending you such a miserable interpreter of one's feelings as a letter, give you the look and the hand of warm affection! This British Channel really looks as blue as the Mediterranean today. What weather! Love to all from
Your affectionate
Marian.
