A happy New Year to you and yours!
I have never answered your note in which you invited me to call at your house on my way to my sister's. I am sure that note was written with the kindest intentions, but if you had thought twice you would have seen that I was not likely to take a journey twice as long as necessary and walk all through Coventry in order to make a call where I had only the invitation of the master of the house. I went straight from London to Nuneaton by express in two hours and a half, and returned in the same way. In this season one likes to abridge railway journeying as much as possible.
You will be glad to hear that I found my sister and her children very well and comfortable. She mentioned your kindness in sending her a newspaper. I, as well as she, am obliged to you. While I have been away Mr. Lewes has I hope been getting a great deal of good from a visit to his friend Mr. Helps at his pleasant place in Hampshire. 655 He returns to me on Friday or Saturday. Meanwhile I am trying to fill up the gap his absence makes by being as industrious as possible. 656
