Strand | October 6.
Dear Friend,
I don't advise you to come to see Frederika Bremer -- she is old -- extremely ugly, and deformed -- I should think she is nearly sixty. 1015 Her eyes are sore -- her teeth horrid. I tell you this, not because I have no veneration for the earthen vessel of such an inspiration as hers, but because I think a pilgrimage to see her would end in disappointment. I have not been introduced to her yet, having been out of the way. Yesterday I dined at Mr. Ellis's at Champion Hill. 1016 Mrs. Ellis delightful -- Sharon Turner's daughter, you know -- Mr. very good, but a bore. Mrs. E. and her son and daughter are going to see George Combe.
I shan't tell you how I cried about you all the other night and how I have felt like an [orfling] ever since you were gone. 1017 But every one is very kind and attentive to me and my only real lasting trouble is my own emptiness. Thank Cara for the parcel and note -- eke Sara. Who is J.N.W.J.? who sends me respectful comp[limen]ts.
I think Hickson's article very poor in argument. There is throughout the article 1018 a miserable confusion of the universal with the particular -- see first in the 3d page where [he] speaks of the worn out machine, the motive power remaining -- and the conclusion too, which he puts in large type -- Blanco White's sonnet 1019 is better than all the rest -- indeed as Dr. Hodgson says, the subject is better dealt with in poetry than in prose. In haste -- ever
Your affectionate
Marian.
