Dear Friend
Eh bien! I will welcome the Bookcase. Please to add to your other goodness that of letting me know when it will arrive, as the impenetrability of matter positively forbids my having two Bookcases in my room at once. Poor Mr. Chapman has just left me, looking fagged to death from having, as a bit of extra work yesterday, run along the Strand after a thief who had managed to get into the house and out of it with £8 worth of plate! 387
Hitherto I have been spending £9 per month -- at least after that rate -- but I have had frequent guests. I am exceedingly comfortable and feel quite at home now. Harriet Martineau has been very kind -- called again on Tuesday, and yesterday sent to invite me to go to Lady Compton's, 388 where she is staying, on Saturday evening. This, too, in spite of my having vexed her by introducing Mr. Lewes to her, which I did as a desirable bit of peacemaking. 389
Pray let me know of any opening in the clouds. Love to Cara and Sara.
