My dear Mr. Bray
I am sure you will be glad to do a little kindness, if you can, to a granddaughter of Dr. Southwood Smith. Gertrude has just been bringing out a new edition of "the Physiology of Health," 304 and she was saying last night, that she very much wished to alight on one of the earliest editions which contained a Preface. Her grandfather had not retained a copy of one of these editions, and she has hitherto been unable to see one. She wishes merely to see the said Preface.
As my first acquaintance with the book was made through your copy, it immediately occurred to me that that copy might be one containing the Preface, and if so, I felt sure you would oblige me and her by lending it. Will you kindly look [Several lines cut off with signature] clear sharp weather, if, as I trust, it is not more trying to your dear invalid than the closer milder weather that preceded it.
