Dear Friend
I have not merely had a headache -- I have been really ill, and feel very much shattered. I must tell you this to account for my not writing on Saturday after your dear letter which came to comfort me in bed.
I am a hideous hag now, but if I don't get up some better looks before next Tuesday week, seeing you will at least make me look brighter. Do come on Monday and be with us in the evening. Why not? as Bunsby says. 30 I want to introduce you to somebody. 31
Sara is the dearest creature, ready to find pleasure in the smallest things, else she would have had little pleasure in this visit. We dined yesterday at Mr. Peter Taylor's, 32 at Sydenham. I was not fit to go, especially to make my d'e9but at a strange place, but the country air was a temptation. Sara seemed to like it. This morning she is sitting quietly by my fire reading Social Statics with many interjections. Miss Parkes is very pretty in her attentions, called yesterday to see how I was and looked affectionately at me.
I was quite interested in Cara's letter -- the description of the Stratford visit 33 etc., but I think it is very healthy for you to be alone a little while, much as I should enjoy breaking your solitude. The thick of the work is just beginning and I am bound in honour not to run away from it, as I have shirked all labour but what is strictly editorial this quarter. But we will talk of this when you come.
I wish I could hear some better news about business -- do remember what God made man for. 34 I had a long letter from Geo. Combe the other day in which he too inquires about Thornton Hunt and asks me if possible to remove him from "the category of the reckless." 35
