My dear Mr. Bray
I think we have given away all available scraps of old clothing to various claimants, but I am very glad to send my mite towards relieving the poor Radford weavers 296 in the shape of a cheque for £1.0.0. I will not fail to give your "scientific doubt" to Mr. Spencer when I next see him. His present address is 88 Kensington Gardens Square W. Of late he has been interesting himself in the fortunes of the Reader, which he thinks important as a journal that takes special note of scientific progress. It (the Reader) has been changing its proprietorship, and the scientific portion is edited by Huxley and Tindal. You read, I dare say, the article on Spiritualism by Tindal in the last number. 297
Mr. Lewes and I are recovering from our dyspeptic miseries. Until the last week I think I was rather the worse invalid of the two, but now I am brisk again. I think I had disordered myself by taking tonics that disturbed the liver -- by trying to be better than Nature meant me to be.
I have seen people much changed by the Banting system. 298 Mr. A. Trollope is thinner by means of it, and is otherwise the better for the self-denial. Best love to Cara and Sara and all sympathetic wishes for Nelly.
