My dear Mr. Bray
Is it true that your letter was a joke, and that the worthy Mrs. Bray you proposed to bring was really Cara? Mr. Lewes said so, on reading your letter (which I had already answered), and I almost wished he had been as stupid as I was, so that I might have been saved the vexatious disappointment of knowing that I had missed my unexpected chance of seeing Cara with you.
My dulness has an apology in the fact that I answered my letters just before I began my morning's work, and at that time I am always in haste to have done with letters. O dear, O dear, I am unfortunate, and, like many unfortunate people, feel spiteful, almost wishing that you were serious, and guilty of proposing to bring some strange Mrs. Bray to see me.
We returned from Niton on Wednesday. I did not write before lest you should still be away from home.
