Dear Friend
I want very much to know how business has been going on, and that it is not too late for you to benefit by the more cheerful state of things. Pray satisfy my curiosity, which springs, I assure you, from a most respectable region of the head.
To set you an example of communicativeness, I tell you that "Goethe's Life" is at length going to be published on thoroughly satisfactory terms, 595 and that we shall soon "hail with delight," as sub-editors say, the appearance of the first proof sheet.
My brother has sent me an order on Jones, Lloyd and Co. 596 for my half year's income, with a kind letter saying that he hopes to find a good investment for the money which has been called in.
I think we like East Sheen better and better, and are happier every day -- writing hard, walking hard, reading Homer 597 and science and rearing tadpoles. I read aloud for about three hours every evening, beginning with Boswell's Johnson, or some such enjoyable book, not unfriendly to digestion, then subsiding into the dreary dryness of Whewell's History of the Inductive Sciences and winding up with Heine's wit and imagination. 598 We breakfast at 'bd past 8, read to ourselves till 10, write till 'bd past 1, walk till nearly 4, and dine at 5, regretting each day as it goes.
I hope you think the supplement of the Leader a respectable turnout. Mr. Lewes wrote the articles on Sydney Smith, Owen Meredith, Newton's Boyhood, and How to live a hundred years and I wrote the one on Menander and Greek Comedy. 599

You have often scolded me for not writing about my own affairs. See how I am improved! Best love to Cara and the enclosed letter to Sara.
