Dear Friend
Thanks for your hearty words of steadfast affection. When I said that my last letter 535 was for you alone, I simply meant that you were not to consider it as a message and to quote it as such to any outsiders at Edinburgh 536 or elsewhere, but merely to use the information it contained in any way that seemed right and wise to you. You know I am already suffering from imaginary words attributed to me, and I need not tell you that any real ones would soon get twisted and exaggerated, and be bandied about from Edinburgh to London. I decline to make any direct communication to any person about my private affairs except to yourself and those who are one with you, and to Mr. Chapman. You know the truth about me, and I only ask of your friendship that you will state as much of it as you think proper to those who 'abdesire to know it'bb have any sincere interest in me.
We leave Weimar on Thursday, so that my address in future will be Poste Restante, Berlin.
Our ink is dried up and I can scarcely make it hold out to write you this. I wish I could write to you about all the pleasant things and people we have seen here. But another time.
