Dear Friend
The only thing I am sorry for now about that affair of the car is your vexation in consequence of it. Pray think no more of it. I am sure the influenza has made me guilty of far worse sins. I have forgotten everything for the last five weeks except my own uncomfortable sensations.
The worst consequence of my non-appearance at the station when I was expected was, that I missed the joke of having Dr. Hodgson, 322 who has let his beard grow, introduced to me as Mr. Hale, an American. Mr. Chapman amused himself with imagining the cross looks I should give him for bringing an odious Yankee to meet me. I have been to the Exhibition this morning with Dr. Hodgson and am of course tired to death. I feel weaker here -- from the greater warmth I suppose -- than I did in the country.
I am very grateful to you and Cara for having me and bearing with me when I was so poorly and disagreeable. I hope you will enjoy your summer pleasures all the more for the thought that you have done me good. In haste
