MS: Yale. Extract published: George Eliot and John Chapman, pp. 66-67.
Monday Morning.
Dear Friend
At last I have determined to leave this house and get another home for myself. Many reasons, besides my health, concur to make me desire this change. I suppose I must stay here, however, until the April number is out of our hands.
You once said that you would help me in such a case, and if you do not repent of that word I shall be most grateful for the kindness. I hope you will arrange to spend a quiet hour with me when you come to town.
You ask why I think Miss Lynn in want of friends. I know that she has great difficulty in obtaining any literary employment, and one can easily see how this must seriously affect her comfort in many ways.
Ever yours affectionately
Marian.
