Dearest Bessie
I think it is desirable for the sake of the Journal as well as on other grounds that you should publish a correction of the misstatement made last month; 86 but I think it is not right, unless Mrs. Oliphant has requested it, that you should say "we are requested to say" etc. It would be very indelicate for me to request it, and unless she has done so, the inference will be that I have made the request. "We have since received the best authority for contradicting that statement," would express all I could request.
With regard to the slip from the Publisher's Circular 87 -- it is a mere piece of gossip without any authorization, and as the Cornhill for next month will appear with the commencement of my book before the E. W. J. is out, there can be no object in inserting it.
I hope you are seeing a little more daylight about affairs, and getting some comfort.
