Dear Friend
The malicious little Pucks who manage human affairs of course contrive that we should always miss each other. I am so confident that they would play us the same trick if I walked to Savile 101 Row for the sake of seeing you, that in the impossibility of finding time to do half what I want to do just now I must beg you to "consider yourself called upon" -- and to have the charity to turn in here whenever any business or pleasure brings you into my neighbourhood without regard to reciprocity in visits. I was very sorry to lose the pleasure you so kindly intended for me -- of seeing Miss Leigh Smith. I hope some compensation is in reserve for me.
By the bye, I think our projected visit to the Academy which was to depend on your being disengaged must be put off for a week or two, which will be of no consequence to any of us, as we have all seen the pictures.
