My dear Sir
I hope that you have conjecturally attributed my silence to its true cause, namely, my absence from home. Before the Spanish Gypsy appeared we set out for Germany and have been spending eight weeks, or more, chiefly in the Black Forest. My thanks reach you laggingly, but they are not the less sincere. I assure you that I value very highly the expression of your sympathy, and shall reckon it among the things that have cheered and helped me.
