Shottermill | Petersfield | July 28. 71.
My dear Madam
I am much obliged by your kind letter -- by its expressions of sympathy and its indication of error.
It is long since I opened Adam Bede, and here in a country retreat, I have no copy by me. I am surprized to learn that there is the incongruous statement about the Leicester coach, 43 as my heart and thoughts were thoroughly in the imagination of the circumstances in 1858, when the book was written. Just at present there is no remedy as the current edition is stereotyped.
Believe me, dear Madam
Yours with sincere obligation
M. E. Lewes.
