On this last day of the old year, I have received a cheque for £1300, being £1000 for the second instalment for "The Mill" and £300 for the 12/. editions of Adam Bede and Clerical Scenes.
This year has been marked by many blessings, and above all by the comfort we have found in having Charles with us. Since we set out on our journey to Italy on March 25. the time has not been fruitful in work: distractions about our change of residence have run away with many days, and since I have been in London my state of health has been depressing to all effort. May the next year be more fruitful.
