Gentlemen,
You may remember that last Autumn I wrote to you about a proposed extension of an article of mine on "George Eliot" in the Contemporary Review into a small volume. I wish to let you know that a press of work of various kinds made it impossible for me to carry out my intention, nor can I hope now to find time to do so. But I wrote what would have formed one long chapter of the book -- on "Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda." This I disposed of by sending it to The Contemporary Review in which it will appear. 596 It was a great satisfaction to me to have an opportunity of saying my say about "Daniel Deronda," which seems to me to move in a higher plane of thought and feeling than any other work of its author.
