I hear today at second hand that they have taken a house in Cheyne Walk. I hope it may be true. I had a horrible dread of having to welcome Johnny in the place where I had known Lewes. And yet I feel robbed -- as if I had lost something irreplaceable -- now I shall never see that room again -- it is taken from me without so much as a moment's farewell. She wrote to Mrs. Burne Jones and to Blackwood the night before. The things that are said of her hurt me. They go back to the old story. I cannot believe that she built her happiness upon a separation, 556 that but for her need not have come. No doubt she lets her own feeling count for something, but I am sure the controlling motive was the thought for him. The only difference this has made in my feeling is to give me courage to blame myself less where she has been apt to blame me for not being like herself.
